Microsoft's engineering team just explained why ranking pages and grounding AI answers are fundamentally different problems — and why that gap matters more than your current SEO strategy accounts for.

A blog post published by Microsoft's AI team on May 6, 2026 does something unusual for a platform vendor: it explains, in detail, why the infrastructure built to serve human searchers is not the same infrastructure required to serve AI-generated answers. The post is written by three engineers from Microsoft AI. It carries no marketing angle. That makes it worth reading carefully.

Before getting into what they said, a working definition. When an AI system generates an answer — in Copilot, in AI Overviews, in any large language model (LLM) connected to the web — it doesn't just synthesize from training data. It retrieves content from indexed web pages and uses that content as the factual foundation for its response. That process is called grounding. A grounded answer is tethered to sources that can be verified. An ungrounded answer is the model reasoning from memory — which is where confident, wrong answers come from.

Grounding is what makes AI search trustworthy in principle. The question the Microsoft engineers are asking: is the index — the infrastructure Google and Bing have spent decades building to serve human searchers — actually the right tool for that job? Their answer is that it's the right starting point but not sufficient on its own. And understanding why has direct implications for how your content gets treated by every AI system connected to the web.

The core argument: traditional search asks which pages a user should visit. Grounding asks what information an AI system can responsibly use to construct a response. Those questions look similar. They are not.

The Unit of Value Has Changed

In traditional search, the unit of value is the document. A page ranks well, a human clicks through, skims it, decides whether it fits, and moves on. If the first result is wrong, the user recovers. The system tolerates imperfection because humans are good at self-correction. You've done this thousands of times — opened a result, decided in three seconds it wasn't quite right, hit back, tried the next one. The entire search experience is built around that human judgment loop.

Grounding operates on a fundamentally different unit. The AI system isn't presenting options for a human to evaluate — it's constructing a single response and delivering it. Multiple sources get retrieved, processed, and collapsed into one answer. The user never sees the sources unless they actively expand a citations panel. There is no "skim and decide" step. By the time the answer reaches the user, the evaluation has already happened inside the system.

This means the AI system has to make a judgment the search engine never had to make: not just whether a piece of content is relevant, but whether the evidence behind a specific claim is strong enough to assert. The Microsoft engineers are explicit about this. A grounding system must decide not only what to answer, but whether it has sufficient evidence to answer at all. Abstention — choosing not to answer rather than answer poorly — is a valid and designed outcome. A search engine that returned no results would be considered broken. A grounding system that declines to answer when evidence is weak is working as intended.

That is a genuinely different posture toward information quality. And it means content that is technically indexed and technically retrievable may still fail the grounding bar — not because it can't be found, but because the AI system can't use it as reliable evidence.

Search optimizes for likelihood of relevance. Grounding must measure strength of evidence.

What the Index Must Measure Differently

To understand why the index needs to evolve, it helps to understand what the index actually does with your content before any search or AI system touches it. When Googlebot or Bingbot crawls a page, it doesn't store the page as-is. It breaks the content into chunks — smaller units of text that can be matched against queries. That chunking process has worked well for search for decades, because the job was to match a document to a query well enough for a human to evaluate on click-through.

For grounding, chunking introduces a new risk. When a page gets broken into fragments, the context that made a claim meaningful can get separated from the claim itself. A statement that reads clearly in the context of the surrounding paragraph may become ambiguous or misleading when extracted as a standalone chunk. Dense, hedged writing — the kind that qualifies every statement before making it — is especially vulnerable. The AI retrieves the chunk. The actual claim isn't clearly there.

The Microsoft engineers identify the key dimensions where grounding requirements diverge from what traditional search indexing was built to measure:

The freshness point deserves more attention than it typically gets. In the search world, a page that hasn't been updated in two years might rank lower. In a grounding context, that same page — if retrieved and used to construct an answer — produces a misleading response with no visible warning signal. The cost of staleness is categorically different.

Same with contradictions. Search engines can surface conflicting sources and let the user arbitrate. A grounding system that silently resolves a contradiction between two indexed sources and then asserts a confident answer is doing something qualitatively more dangerous. The engineers flag this explicitly: conflict must be detected and represented, not quietly resolved.

Grounding Doesn't Replace Search — It Adds a New Layer

The engineers are direct about the most common misreading of this shift: grounding is not a replacement for search infrastructure. It builds on the same crawlers, the same quality signals, the same deep web indexing. Every piece of SEO hygiene that has mattered for the last decade still matters. The technical foundation is the same.

What's different is the optimization layer on top — and specifically how errors propagate through it. In traditional search, a bad result sits in position one until a human rejects it and tries something else. The error is local and self-correcting. In grounding, AI systems construct answers through a retrieval loop: retrieve content, evaluate whether it supports a claim, combine with other sources, retrieve again if confidence is low, re-evaluate, synthesize. Each step in that loop inherits the errors of the previous one. A piece of content that gets retrieved early in the loop with a subtly wrong or outdated fact can influence the shape of the final answer in ways no individual reviewer would catch, because the loop completed before any human saw the output.

This is why the Microsoft engineers argue the index needs to understand not just what a page says, but how much evidentiary weight it carries. A primary source with named methodology and a clear publication date is not equivalent to a derivative summary with no author and an ambiguous date — even if both rank similarly in traditional search. For grounding purposes, they are categorically different inputs.

Jordi Ribas, a Microsoft corporate vice president, captured the stakes on X: "In the era of the agentic web, the role of the web index needs to evolve to support very different needs across agents and humans."

What this means for your content

Factual fidelity — whether the indexed representation of your page accurately preserves what you actually wrote — is now a distinct quality dimension. The chunking and transformation processes that make content retrievable can distort meaning. Clear, atomic, directly attributable claims are harder to distort than dense, hedged prose.

Not all indexed content carries equal evidentiary weight in a grounding system. The engineers say this plainly: the index needs to understand that distinction. Content that reads as primary-source, clearly dated, with named authors and transparent methodology is better positioned than anonymized, undated, or derivative content.

The Measurement Gap Is the Real Problem

The most candid part of the engineers' post is their acknowledgment of where the field actually stands. Decades of practice exist for measuring search quality — click-through rates, dwell time, ranking position, impressions. None of those metrics tell you whether your content is working as evidence in an AI-generated answer. The measurement infrastructure for grounding quality is still being built.

What that means practically: a marketing team can have excellent Search Console data, healthy organic rankings, and strong click-through rates — and have no visibility into whether their content is being retrieved and grounded into AI answers, retrieved and ignored, or not retrieved at all. The tools that have governed content investment decisions for the last fifteen years measure a different job than the one AI systems are doing with your content today.

The question is no longer just whether an answer was retrieved. It is whether the evidence behind it was accurate, fresh, clearly attributable, and internally consistent. Those are harder properties to engineer and harder to measure. They require a different understanding of what "content quality" means — one that is less about engagement signals and more about what the Microsoft engineers call epistemic reliability: whether your content can be trusted as evidence, not just as reading material.

The measurement infrastructure will catch up. Until it does, the content posture that positions you well for grounding is the same posture that makes content trustworthy to humans: clear claims, named sources, explicit dates, original perspective. The technical requirements and the editorial requirements point the same direction.

What to do Monday

Audit your content for grounding fitness, not just search performance.

Pull your 20 most-trafficked pages. For each one, ask: if an AI system retrieved a 300-word chunk from this page and used it to construct an answer, would that answer be accurate, attributable, and current? That is a different question than "does this rank well."

Flag pages where claims are hedged to the point of being ungroundable, where dates are absent or ambiguous, where authorship is unclear, or where the information has drifted from current reality. Those pages are liabilities in a grounding environment — not because they rank poorly, but because they produce wrong AI answers.

Prioritize updating pages that contain time-sensitive facts first. In search, a stale page is a ranking problem. In AI grounding, it is a trust problem — one that surfaces in an answer your customers receive, not a position on a results page you can monitor.
